Our History

Rooted in the Hauenstein Region Since 2005

Modern Steam am Hauenstein was established in 2005 through a determined initiative to safeguard the S9 service over the historic Hauenstein line. When replacement by bus services became an imminent prospect, we developed not merely a vision, but a comprehensive strategy combining public transport, innovative steam technology, tourism and additional regional value creation.

Over the following two decades, this initiative evolved into a diversified Swiss railway organisation. Today, we combine living railway heritage with operational railway services, rail freight, FOT-recognised training, technical expertise, strategic advisory services, charter operations and international railway projects.

2005

The Initiative Gains Momentum

Modern Steam am Hauenstein is founded on 22 September. The objective is not merely to defend the S9 against the imminent threat of replacement by buses, but to establish a long-term future through an entrepreneurial, tourism-oriented and technical strategy.

2006

Strategy Instead of Closure

The business plan financed by Modern Steam provides a decision-making basis for public authorities, the cantonal parliament and municipalities. An independent study by the Zurich University of Applied Sciences in Winterthur validates the wider economic approach and forecasts approximately CHF 18.5 million in tourism-related gross value added for the region in the fifth year of operation.

2008

Successful Trial Operation

To mark the 150th anniversary of the old Hauenstein line, 16 steam services operate on 31 May and 1 June using the modernised locomotive 52 8055. Approximately 3,000 fare-paying passengers demonstrate the line’s considerable tourism potential.

2009

Steam Services Complementing Regional Transport

The operating concept specifically targets off-peak periods between commuter peaks. Leisure travellers, families, hikers and cyclists are intended to generate additional revenue and improve the commercial viability of the service.

Further Development

From Project to Railway Organisation

Special train services, heritage rolling stock, technical projects and cooperation with experienced railway partners broaden the organisation’s scope. Sissach becomes its operational base and the point of departure for numerous railway activities.

Today

Rail Expertise for the Future

Modern Steam combines its heritage with the requirements of today’s railway sector: rail freight and logistics, professional training and continuing education, strategy and advisory services, charter operations, international projects and competence centres.

Historical figures are based on the Modern Steam am Hauenstein business plan, the project work undertaken by the Institute of Public Management at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences in Winterthur, and the project documentation available at the time. The assessment of Modern Steam’s contribution to safeguarding the S9 reflects the documented project history and the organisation’s considered view.
